The Market House

Despite its name, this building was never a market house and has had a chequered history.

Constructed in the early 1700s, it was originally an ale house with an attached smithy. In 1786, it was converted into a chapel by the Countess of Huntingdon, a wealthy and influential Methodist leader. From the 1850s, it was used by a series of businesses and for much of the 20th century, it was the offices of livestock market auctioneers. In 1991 it was sold to South Oxfordshire District Council.
