After the school relocated to Wheatley, the Mansion House was sold at an auction at the Spread Eagle on Tuesday 1st March 1949 by Messrs E.P. Messenger & Son.

In the 1960s, cooperation between the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, the Historic Buildings Council, the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works and Oxfordshire County Council was ‘confused and ineffective’, and the Mansion House was eventually demolished in 1965 before a preservation order could be placed on the building.
The local papers lamented the loss of ‘a reminder of Thame’s historic past’.
