In 1887, Mr Stevens, the Chair of the Local Board, called a public meeting to discuss the construction of a Commemorative Hall to mark Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The Hall would also provide better meeting rooms and community facilities.
A committee of nineteen gentlemen was set up to oversee the project, and funding was raised through public subscription. The old Market Hall (not to be confused with the Market House) was purchased from Lord Abingdon for £100, and the new Town Hall cost £2601. A shortfall of £883 was paid off through the rates.
