This wooden object is a yoke for carrying pails of milk. Cows were usually milked in the fields and then the pails carried like this to the dairy.
A dairy maid with a yoke would have been a common sight for centuries.
Two full pails of milk would probably have weighed well over 20kg. Today one 2 litre bottle of milk weighs around 2kg.
