William (Workhouse inmate)

William (1810-1891) was an agricultural labourer who spent his life in and out of the workhouse. In 1832, he married Mary, with both of them signing the marriage record with an X.

A lack of work meant that William and his family were evicted from their home at least once, being given just 21 days to leave. Over the years, William was gaoled for misdemeanours such as leaving his wife and children chargeable to the parish of Thame, and disturbances in the workhouse, including breaking a window and refusing to work.

William is buried in St. Mary’s churchyard but there is no memorial stone for either him or Mary.
