Burgage Plots

These were long, narrow strips of land (originally about 22 yards wide and 220 yards long) branching off both sides of the High Street.

The freehold plots attracted tradesmen to the town as the owner was able to gift or sell the land and only paid a ground-rent of twelve pence per year (£35 today) to the Bishop. The plots could be subdivided (with more than one house per plot), and by 1305 there were 76.

The burgesses who owned these plots used them to run businesses, store goods, and house their families. Most of the plots were on the south side between High Street and Southern Road.
