Our Edwardian school child is using a slate which you could write on with a special slate pencil. School children had been using slates in school for hundreds of years.

If you look at his desk you will also see an ink well. Older Edwardian children would use a dipping ink pen and paper for their writing. Just like today they would practice their handwriting, copying patterns and letters.
Before dipping ink pens with metal nibs were invented, people wrote with feather quills and ink.
You probably use a small whiteboard in school sometimes – just like using a slate!
